In search of the dirty sound
In the 1960s he was still the ‘enfant terrible’ of contemporary music, in 1990 he set an almost classic standard for the violin-concerto genre: György Ligeti, the composer who was always searching. For the violin concerto he sought, by his own admission, for “imprecise intonation and a ‘dirty’ sound”. Who could do justice to this contradictory personality better than Patricia Kopatchinskaja, the barefoot, energy-charged eccentric for whom even the ‘ugly’ noises made by the bow are part of music making, and who, like Ligeti, is searching for the ‘dirt’ in music?
