World star of the lied

Matthias Goerne (Baritone)
Alexander Schmalcz (Piano)

Ludwig van Beethoven:
Six songs to words by Christian Fürchtegott Gellert, op. 48

Alban Berg:
Four songs, op. 2

Franz Schubert:
Harpist‘s songs from Johann Wolfgang von Goethe’s ‘Wilhelm Meister’, op. 12

Ludwig van Beethoven:
'An die ferne Geliebte’. Song cycle to words by Alois Jeitteles, op. 98

Franz Schubert:
Six songs to words by Heinrich Heine from the song cycle ‘Schwanengesang’, D 957

Even the era of Beethoven and Schubert had norms. One was the public’s expectations about how music should be packaged: six-piece units stood the greatest chance of success. Beethoven’s ‘Gellert Songs’ and ‘An die ferne Geliebte’ met this standard, as did the Heine settings from Schubert’s ‘Schwanengesang’. But both composers also epitomise the trend to the unique and inimitable work of art, as realised in the lied with its equality of music and poetry. A prime example is Schubert’s ‘Harfner Songs’ from Goethe’s ‘Wilhelm Meister’. Matthias Goerne, the ‘world star of the lied’, brings to life this age of burgeoning romanticism.
