Olympian Beethoven
This year's cycle of the nine Beethoven symphonies was planned in association with the Beethovenfest Bonn and is special for two reasons. Firstly, while Esa-Pekka Salonen is beginning and ending with the first and ninth symphonies respectively, he is otherwise breaking with the usual chronological order. Secondly, he is combining the Beethoven symphonies with contemporary works, each from a different continent, and is thus pointing to the influence of music as a global phenomenon – in line with the idea of the Olympic Games, which are being held in Summer 2012 in London, the orchestra's home base.
