‘Pléiades, un concert de musique et de danse’ (German premiere)

The Pleiades are a cluster of stars in the constellation of Taurus. They are also a masterpiece of 1978 by the Graeco-French composer Iannis Xenakis. But it was long forgotten that Xenakis originally wrote the piece for music and dance, thereby fulfilling a joint commission from the Percussions de Strasbourg and the Ballet du Rhin. Proceeding from this conception, the versatile French choreographer Alban Richard has produced his own version, calling it ‘Concert de musique et de danse’ (2011). Framed and  surrounded by six percussionists, six dancers fling themselves into the abstract maelstrom of Xenakis’s music. Not only do dance and music merge, the dancers and musicians indulge directly in a synergetic exchange.
