Are the fragments which have come down to us from the 19th century not the forms that, unintentionally, point to the future? The open question "How might it go on?" has been left by a number of great symphonic composers as a puzzle for posterity to answer. Two of the weightiest fragments, from either end of the century, have been combined by Kent Nagano to create a tension-filled programme.
Nagano's clearly structured Bruckner was heard in Bonn once before, in 2010 (on that occasion, the Seventh Symphony); at the Beethovenfest 2012 he will complete the arcs of sound of the unfinished Ninth.
