‘Hymn of Praise’ – the Closing Concert

Lucy Crowe (Soprano)
Jurgita Adamonytė (Soprano)
Patrick Grahl (Tenor)
Monteverdi Choir
London Symphony Orchestra
John Eliot Gardiner (Conductor)

Ludwig van Beethoven:
Ouverture no. 3 to the opera ‘Fidelio’ op. 72

Ludwig van Beethoven:
»Meeresstille und Glückliche Fahrt« for chorus and orchestra op. 112 in D major

Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy:
»Lobgesang«. Symphonie-Kantate für Vokalsolisten, Chor und Orchester op. 52

Whether salvation for a becalmed ship, escape from imprisonment or an ascent from darkness to light: all three works on this evening‘s programme lead from perilous situations to a happy dénouement. A fine and conciliatory ending to a festival devoted to the theme of ‘Revolutions’! Grand seigneur John Eliot Gardiner will unite two composers who are more similar than it might seem: Mendelssohn, too, wrote a musical setting of Goethe‘s ‘Calm Sea and Prosperous Voyage’, and he situated his ‘Lobgesang’ Symphony – a work of enormous popularity around 1840 – in the near vicinity of Beethoven‘s Ninth.
