La Scala on the Rhine
In order to add a symphonic dimension to the operatic tradition of La Scala in Milan, in 1982 Claudio Abbado founded the Filarmonica della Scala. Since then, the orchestra has regularly toured as a mediator between opera and concert music. For Bonn, the conductor Daniel Harding, who has worked closely together with the orchestra since 2006, has selected, alongside the overture to Verdi's opera "The Force of Destiny", two more works by well-known operatic composers. The soprano Christine Schäfer, who is making her first appearance at the Beethovenfest Bonn, will be singing Richard Strauss's "Four Last Songs", a late work of overpowering emotional depth. The concert will close with Dvořák's warm and optimistic Eighth Symphony.
