Since 2015 the Beethovenfest has invited leading European composers to come to grips with Beethoven in new compositions. For 2017 the commission went to the successful Russian composer Vladimir Tarnopolski, who chose Beethoven's Fourth Piano Concerto as his point of departure. We're keen to hear the results of his view of Beethoven – the view of a musician familiar with all the sounds of our time. Then we will be swept away to a funfair of Russian folk theatre in »Petrushka«, the colourful and effective ballet score by his fellow-countryman Igor Stravinsky. A world of mysteriously living marionettes – and a bitter-sweet love story.
