Love fulfilled, love doomed

Jean-Yves Thibaudet (Piano)
Gustav Mahler Jugendorchester
Ingo Metzmacher (Conductor)

Arnold Schönberg:
Accompaniment to a Film-Scene, op. 34

George Gershwin:
Concerto in F for piano and orchestra

Béla Bartók:
‘Der wunderbare Mandarin’. Suite, op. 19 Sz 73

Maurice Ravel:
‘Daphnis et Chloé’. Suite no. 2

»Daphnis and Chloe« is the title of a famous pastoral romance from Antiquity that ends in a ravishing celebration of the senses. After writing a ballet score on the subject, Maurice Ravel extracted two suites from it for concert performance – magical invocations of nature in masterly orchestration! Another suite from a ballet score is Béla Bartók's The Miraculous Mandarin, set in a grimy urban district where a girl is forced into prostitution by pimps. A mysterious Chinese mandarin falls in love with her – and is murdered. But he refuses to die before the girl takes him in her arms. Impressionist masterpiece vs. Expressionist modernism: it's an ideal combination for a fiery conductor such as Ingo Metzmacher.
