Composing Conductor
Since 2008 the Finnish conductor and composer Esa-Pekka Salonen has been chief conductor of the London-based Philharmonia Orchestra. His association with this orchestra goes back much further: since 1983, when he made his London debut at the age of 25, stepping in at the last minute to conduct a now-legendary performance of Mahler's Third. Overnight, so to speak, an artist who regarded himself primarily as a conducting composer became a composing conductor at the start of a global career – a fantastic precondition for atmospheric erformances of Brett Dean's "Testament" and Beethoven's second and third symphonies on the second evening of the symphony cycle.
