Wondrous Sonorities

In this compilation, Esa-Pekka Salonen once again breaks with the conventions of concert planning. He juxtaposes the mighty Fifth not with the idyllic Sixth, but with the playful Eighth. For his accompanying contemporary composition, Salonen has selected a work by a composer whose professional path crossed his own: Steven Stucky. He was Consulting Composer for Contemporary Music at the Los Angeles Philharmonic at the time when Salonen was Musical Director of the orchestra. In 2007 he conducted the first performance of the work being played today, "Radical Light", which, according to the “Los Angeles Times”, serves up "wondrous sonorities".
