A whole distant world

Miklós Perényi (Cello)
Beethoven Orchester Bonn
Dirk Kaftan (Conductor)

Ludwig van Beethoven:
Symphony no. 7 in A major, op. 92

Henri Dutilleux:
‘Tout un monde lointain’. Cello concerto

Maurice Ravel:
‘La Valse’. Poème chorégraphique. (1919/20)

The première of Beethoven’s Seventh Symphony took place at a moment of great political turmoil. The Battle of Leipzig, also known as the Battle of the Nations, had been fought only a few weeks earlier, and Beethoven’s concert was turned into a benefit event for the anti-Napoleonic forces. Maurice Ravel’s ‘La valse’, conceived for the Ballets Russes and completed shortly after the end of World War I, ends in an utter collapse. And Henri Dutilleux’s late cello concerto of 1970, ‘Tout un monde lontain’ (A whole distant world), relates to a poem from Baudelaire’s ‘Fleurs du mal’ that underlies all five orchestral movements. The evening’s soloist is Miklós Perényi of Hungary, one of the great cellists of our time.
