Johannes Brahms:
Piano trio no. 1 in B major, op. 8 (first version)

Johannes Brahms:
Piano quartet no. 3 in C minor, op. 60 (‘Werther-Quartett’)

‘New paths’: thus the title with which Robert Schumann proclaimed, in 1853, that Beethoven’s legacy would be guided into the future by Johannes Brahms. A few months later Brahms presented what he himself called a ‘wildling’: his Piano Trio, op. 8, with quotations from ‘An die ferne Geliebte’ in the finale. His Piano Quartet, though begun in 1855, needed two decades to reach definitive form. It is a musical sublimation of his love for Clara Schumann; as he wrote jokingly to his publisher in 1875, the printed music should be accompanied by a picture of the composer dressed in the blue-and-yellow attire of Goethe’s ‘Werther’.
