Thus the honorary title bestowed by Franz Liszt on the French composer Hector Berlioz. For Berlioz, the encounter with Beethoven was indeed a wake-up experience: ‘He unveiled to me a new world in music’. But Berlioz forced and drove Beethoven deeper into romanticism. A properly developed ‘theme’ now becomes an ‘idée fixe’, a musical hallucination that haunts every movement. The most thrilling example of this is his ‘Symphonie fantastique’. Tugan Sokhiev, an internationally acclaimed young conductor and, since 2008, the head of the National Orchestra in Toulouse, has also placed Beethoven on his programme: the Fifth Piano Concerto, written while Vienna was occupied by Napoleon‘s troops. Beethoven waxed patriotic: ‘accursed war’ he wrote at the time, and dedicated his concerto to Archduke Rudolph ...
