Love, death and the sea

As so often in the past, the final concert of this year’s Beethovenfest will be presented by the Bamberg Symphony. Great orchestral works feature on the programme, turning the Festival’s theme – love – into sound. Melodious French vocal writing by Chausson and Berlioz allow Betsy Horne and Vesselina Katsarova to conjure up delirious worlds of emotion. Purely instrumental visions appear in the ‘Klangfarbenmelodien’ of György Ligeti’s ‘Lontano’ and Schubert’s ‘Great’ C-major Symphony, the one reclaiming ‘expression’ for contemporary music, the other a famous late creation spaciously unfolding in ‘heavenly lengths’.
