Johannes Brahms:
'Neue Liebeslieder-Walzer'. Song cycle for four voices and four hands piano op. 65 (selection)

as well as works by John Wilbye, Ludwig van Beethoven, Robert Schumann and others

The subject of this concert is love in all its shades and hues, from longing, joy and fulfilment to parting and disappointment. Here compositions by John Wilbye stand alongside the works by Beethoven and Schumann. The first thing that comes to mind when we think of love songs is voice with piano accompaniment. But the 19th century also cultivated a tradition of convivial song, often for four voices. This is the tradition of Johannes Brahms’s ‘Liebeslieder Waltzes’. They fall into two cycles, one primarily cheerful, the other more pensive, but all conveying the spirit of European folk poetry. Vox Bona, a seasoned chamber choir from Bonn’s Kreuzkirche, ensures the high quality of this lovely programme.
