In 2017 the world of music celebrates the 100th birthday of Isang Yun, the Korean composer who, in 1967, fell foul of the political machinations of North and South Korea, and who devoted his life’s work to peace and cultural understanding. The music of this cosmopolitan composer who eventually settled in West Berlin combines the techniques of the Western avant-garde with musical traditions from East Asia. Together with Igor Levit, the cellist Isang Enders has conceived a memorial programme with music by Isang Yun and Beethoven. It will conclude with a cello sonata by Shostakovich that was premièred in 1934, at a time when Stalin’s cultural policies had stifled artistic freedom.
