Beethoven’s work of superlatives
At least 600 pages of sketches, sometimes concurrent sales negotiations with seven publishers, a personal avowal at the start of the score: simply the accompaniment to the creation of Beethoven's "Missa solemnis" make it a work of superlatives. Beethoven proceeds as if he were writing a symphony, painting scenes and moods in sound. The Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen, the Beethovenfest Bonn's long-serving "Orchestra in Residence", has looked at the work in detail for the first time. It was the work which Beethoven himself considered his best. It will be conducted by Herbert Blomstedt, whose fidelity to the work on the programme, whatever it is, is legendary.
