Liberation, funeral dirge, cure

Isabelle Faust (Violin)
BBC Symphony Orchestra
Sakari Oramo (Conductor)

Ludwig van Beethoven:
Ouverture no. 2 to the opera ‘Fidelio’ op. 72

Alban Berg:
Violin concerto (‘To the memory of an angel’)

Robert Schumann:
Symphony no. 2 in C major, op. 61

The Finnish conductor Sakari Oramo and his London orchestra will present three ‘classics’ from the symphonic repertoire. The ‘Leonore Overture’ no. 2 (Beethoven’s music of liberation) and Schumann’s Second Symphony (written between depression and recovery) will frame the most famous of all 20th-century violin concertos. It was composed by Alban Berg in 1935 and bears a dedication ‘to the memory of an angel’, this being the deceased young daughter of Alma Mahler and Walter Gropius. Berg’s object in this piece, the last he ever completed, was ‘to translate the young girl’s essential features into musical characters’ . The solo part is taken by one of the sterling violinists of our time, Isabelle Faust.
