Turkish National Youth Philharmonic Orchestra
In autumn 2012 the Turkish National Youth Philharmonic Orchestra under their conductor Cem Mansur were the guests of the Orchestra Campus staged by Deutsche Welle and the Beethovenfest Bonn. The orchestra, to which some 90 musicians aged between 16 and 24 belong, is the first of three outstanding Turkish youth orchestras coming to the Orchestra Campus between 2012 and 2014. In this way, Deutsche Welle and the Beethovenfest Bonn are taking account of the cultural and economic development in Turkey, and promoting openness and an understanding of different cultures on both the Turkish and the German sides.
The Turkish National Youth Philharmonic Orchestra was formed in 2007 by Cem Mansur and includes many of Turkey’s best young musicians. By 2008 it had already become a large symphonic ensemble, and within just a few years it has achieved a high artistic standard that can stand comparison with other youth orchestras worldwide.
The programme of the Campus Concert included, alongside a work by Beethoven and works by Bartók and Ravel, the first performance of a work commissioned by Deutsche Welle from the young Turkish composer Mehmet Erhan Tanman (b. 1989).
During their stay in Bonn, the Turkish National Youth Philharmonic Orchestra staged musical and intercultural education projects. Following the successful visit by the National Youth Orchestra of Iraq in 2011, the Orchestra Campus demonstrated again how music makes international exchange and intercultural understanding possible.
