Look at Beethoven review 2010

“Utopia and Freedom in Music”

With the project “Look at Beethoven” the Beethovenfest Bonn has since 2006 promoted the artistic confrontation with classical music through visual means: short films, documentaries, installations. 2010 the focus is on film. For the short-film competition “Look at Beethoven” the Beethovenfest had, for the fifth time, encouraged not only film students and film-makers, but also students in allied fields, to find small-format film solutions for a wide variety of aspects of classical music. While absolutely no attempt was made to restrict the entrants’ freedom in respect of form, the competition specified the motto “Utopia and Freedom in Music” as the theme. Five of the numerous entries were awarded with a production grant. They were shown in the auditorium of the Kunstmuseum Bonn on 9 September at 7 p.m. along with a selection of the other entries. The film-makers have been present. In addition, the Beethovenfest Bonn staged two film series of outstanding musical documentaries: in the Beethoven-Haus, and, in co-operation with the Förderverein Filmkultur Bonn e.V., in the Brotfabrik.
