Signum Saxophone Quartet

The four musicians Blaž Kemperle, Erik Nestler, Alan Lužar and Guerino Bellarosa met in Cologne, where they formed the SIGNUM saxophone quartet in 2006. They studied in Cologne, Vienna and Amsterdam, taking inspiration from the Quatuor Ébène, the Artemis Quartett and Gabor Takács-Nágy.

After winning prizes at international competitions in for example Lugano and Berlin, SIGNUM played in concert halls and at festivals in Europe and worldwide; these appearances were followed in 2013 by the debut at the Carnegie Hall in New York. One particular distinction was their designation as ‘ECHO-Rising Stars 2014/2015’ by the European Concert Hall Organization (ECHO), and the invitation to play in Europe’s leading concert halls.

The 2016/17 season is taking SIGNUM once again to numerous European cities and concert halls, as well as to festivals such as the Beethovenfest Bonn, the Bachfesttagen in Köthen, the Tiroler Festspielen Erl, the Musikfest Bremen, the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival, the MDR Musiksommer, the Mecklenburg Vorpommern Festival, the Rheingau Music Festival and the Kissinger Sommer International Music Festival. SIGNUM are also looking forward to a second visit to Korea.

SIGNUM are always on the lookout for new challenges and encounters. Their pleasure in experimentation and their versatility are reflected in their programmes and collaborations for 2016/17: after working together with the cellists Mario Brunello, Matthias Bartolomey, Alexander Hülshoff and Jan Vogler, SIGNUM are looking forward to playing alongside the ‘rising star’ cellist Harriet Krijgh. They will be presenting the programme ‘Distant Beloved’ with the pianists Michail Lifits and Julien Quentin. The Concerto for Orchestra and Saxophone Quartet by Philip Glass, finally, represents the fulfilment of a long-held dream, and it can be heard, among other places, in Genoa, Cagliari, Verona, Vilnius, Klaipėda, Sofia and Cologne.

The four saxophonists have thought up a concert specially for primary-school children, and will be staging it at Cologne’s Philharmonie twice during the 2016/17 season. In addition, they will be presenting the family show ‘Stand by me – the SIGNUM sound experience’ (8+) in Milan, Turin, Cologne, and Brixen (Bressanone).
