Quite a Jolly Piece
It has turned out to be »quite a jolly piece«, Schumann wrote to the publishers Breitkopf & Härtel with regard to his cello concerto, adding: »I believe that especially because so few compositions for this instrument have been written the sales will be entirely satisfactory.« This sentence remained wishful thinking. Even the cellist selected for the first performance turned it down. Today the concerto is amongst the most popular and most frequently performed of this genre. It will be played here by one of the word’s best contemporary cellists, Sol Gabetta. After the interval the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen will be honoured with the »Preis der Deutschen Schallplattenkritik 2010«.
