»With heartfelt emotion«
With this quote from Beethoven’s string quartet op. 132 Luigi Nono dedicated his strong quartet »Fragmente – Stille. An Diotima« to the LaSalle Quartett. The first part of the title describes the work’s audible structure, the second reveals a further layer that is not audible: the score has been enriched with 54 short quotes from Hölderlin poems, which however, according to Nono, »should in no way be read out during the performance«. Suggestions and inklings determine both the textual and the melodic layer of the composition. For the performers this means creating a utopian space and for the listeners it means filling it.
