Robert Schumann: »Scenes from Goethe’s Faust« for solos, choir and orchestra WoO 3
Schumann's Faust
»I have experienced a pleasure like almost none other in my life. This work will in my opinion take its place beside the really great works in music.« Thus Clara Schumann in a letter to Johannes Brahms concerning »Scenes from Goethe’s Faust« by her husband Robert Schumann, which was first performed in Cologne’s Gürzenich hall in 1862 under Ferdinand Hiller. That this composition, lasting more than two hours, is hardly ever played today – an injustice, as Helmuth Rilling shows when he takes on the work, a hybrid between opera, cantata and oratorio, to mark the bicentenary of the composer’s birth.
