Ghost Music
Ghost Trio« sounds a lot more exciting and imaginative than the more objective title piano trio No. 1 in D major, op. 70. It is not known who gave this work the name it is now known by. It was not Beethoven himself, especially because the title is misleading: the palette of timbres and moods goes far beyond the nebulous and ghostly. Dmitri Shostakovich’s piano trio No. 2, a work written in memory of the victims of the Holocaust and of a friend who died in 1944, has a much more ghostly nature. He for the first time included themes from Jewish folk music here in order to express the loss and sadness for those who died.
