Beethoven-Haus Bonn

  • Ludwig van Beethoven: Variations for violin, cello and piano on Wenzel Müller's song »Ich bin der Schneider Kakadu« in G major op. 121a (»Cokatoo Variations«)
  • Ludwig van Beethoven: Trio for violin, cello and piano No. 4 in D major op. 70/1 (»Geister Trio«)
  • Dmitri Schostakowitsch: Trio for violin, cello and piano No.2 op. 67

Ghost Music

Ghost Trio« sounds a lot more exciting and imaginative than the more objective title piano trio No. 1 in D major, op. 70. It is not known who gave this work the name it is now known by. It was not Beethoven himself, especially because the title is misleading: the palette of timbres and moods goes far beyond the nebulous and ghostly. Dmitri Shostakovich’s piano trio No. 2, a work written in memory of the victims of the Holocaust and of a friend who died in 1944, has a much more ghostly nature. He for the first time included themes from Jewish folk music here in order to express the loss and sadness for those who died.
